Official Statement: 2026 Executive Election Results

April 15, 2026

For Immediate Release

Regina, Saskatchewan

URSA is pleased to announce the results of our first ever Annual Executive Election. While there continues to be room to grow, voter turnout more than doubled relative to last semester's referendum, representing an encouraging increase in student voter participation and community engagement. We will continue to work to combat campus apathy and appreciate the efforts all candidates took to raise awareness and campaign, as well as the contributions of our student newspaper, The Carillon, which graciously hosted an All Candidates Forum. We are proud to say that student democracy is once again growing on campus.

Per the report of the Chief Returning Officer, which has been subsequently validated by the URSA Elections Committee, 1,069 students cast their votes in URSA's 2026 election, voting for 9 candidates across 4 executive offices, or abstaining from any of these. Results were as follows:

For President - Ethan Weichart (567), Md. Khaled Hossain (306), Abstensions (145)

For VP Internal - Mary Makinwa (470), Kelvin Chai (354), Siddharth Modi (100), Abstentions (80)

For VP External - Teniola Omotayo (699), Abstensions (264)

For VP Student Life - Lila Banionyte (530), Hafsa Kadwa (192), Anhad K. (69), Abstensions (165)

The CRO's full report can be found on URSA's website at the bottom of the "Elections" page.

Your 2026-2027 Executive Team

With the results ratified by the Elections Committee, the URSA Interim Executive Team can confirm the following students will take office in July and form your URSA Executive Team for the following year:

Ethan Weichart - President

Mary Makinwa - VP Internal

Teniola Omotayo - VP External

Lila Banionyte - VP Student Life

We look forward to working with these students throughout the transition period and will endeavor to ensure they inherit a thriving Students' Association with all governing bodies constituted and checks and balances in place. We thank all candidates for the enthusiasm they showed in their campaigns and their interest in helping URSA serve our amazing student community. We hope all candidates will remain involved as URSA continues to grow, and look forward to hearing from them and others as new opportunities for involvement are announced in the coming months.

Finally, as the role of VP Finance was not contested by any eligible nominee, we will announce a process and timeline for filling that role in the near future, per URSA's constitutionally outlined vacancy procedure. We are hopeful that multiple qualified students will come forward at that time and apply for the position, and encourage students to consider it.
